Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking a highly skilled and proactive Transport Planner to join our bustling operations team in Edinburgh. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve meticulous planning and real-time management. This includes developing and implementing efficient daily transport plans, considering factors such as vehicle capacity, driver availability, geographical constraints, delivery windows, and road network conditions. You will leverage advanced Transport Management Systems (TMS) and route optimization software to create detailed schedules that maximize vehicle utilization and minimize fuel consumption. Beyond planning, you will be responsible for the accurate and timely dispatch of our diverse fleet, providing drivers with clear instructions and support throughout their routes. Proactive communication with drivers, customers, and internal stakeholders will be crucial to success, ensuring that any potential delays or issues are addressed swiftly and effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement efficient daily transport plans, optimizing routes for cost-effectiveness and timely delivery across Scotland and the wider UK.
  • Manage the planning and dispatch of a diverse fleet of vehicles, allocating resources based on capacity, driver availability, and delivery requirements.
  • Utilize Transport Management Systems (TMS) and route optimization software to generate detailed schedules and monitor progress.
  • Communicate proactively and effectively with drivers, clients, and internal teams regarding delivery schedules, updates, and potential issues.
  • Monitor real-time transport operations, identifying and resolving any deviations, delays, or challenges promptly and efficiently.
  • Ensure all transport operations comply with relevant road transport legislation, including driver hours regulations, vehicle maintenance, and safety standards.
  • Analyze transport data and performance metrics to identify areas for continuous improvement in efficiency, cost, and service quality.
  • Manage administrative tasks related to transport operations, including documentation, record-keeping, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with warehouse, sales, and customer service teams to ensure seamless end-to-end logistics solutions.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in transport planning, route design, and vehicle dispatch within a fast-paced logistics environment.
  • Proficiency in using Transport Management Systems (TMS) and route optimization software.
  • Excellent geographical knowledge of Scotland and the broader UK road network.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make quick, informed decisions under pressure.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of interacting effectively with drivers, clients, and colleagues.
  • Sound understanding of road transport legislation, including WTD and tachograph regulations.
  • High level of attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree or professional qualification in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
  • Experience with specific TMS platforms (e.g., Paragon, Mandata, Microlise).
  • Knowledge of hazmat transportation regulations (ADR).
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or team lead role within transport operations.
  • Forklift license or other relevant operational certifications.
