Job Description

Are you a compassionate and dedicated professional with a strong desire to support individuals navigating the complexities of the justice system? Hiring.zycto is seeking a highly empathetic and skilled Victim Services Worker to provide essential court support in the Saddleridge, Calgary area. This pivotal role involves guiding victims of crime through the daunting legal process, offering emotional support, practical assistance, and vital information every step of the way. You will serve as a crucial link between victims and the justice system, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are upheld.

In this role, you will work closely with police, Crown prosecutors, court personnel, and community agencies to facilitate a seamless and supportive experience for individuals impacted by crime. Your day-to-day responsibilities will range from explaining court procedures and legal terminology to providing crisis intervention, safety planning, and referrals to essential community resources such as counseling, financial aid, and housing. The work is challenging yet incredibly rewarding, requiring a resilient individual with exceptional interpersonal skills and an unwavering commitment to advocacy. You will be instrumental in reducing the secondary victimization often experienced by those interacting with the legal system. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide immediate and ongoing emotional support, crisis intervention, and safety planning for victims of crime.
  • Explain court procedures, legal terminology, and the roles of various justice system participants to victims.
  • Accompany victims to court appearances, providing moral support and practical assistance.
  • Assist victims with victim impact statements, compensation applications, and accessing available resources.
  • Liaise with police, Crown prosecutors, court staff, and other community agencies to coordinate victim support services.
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop individualized support plans.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records and case management documentation.
  • Advocate on behalf of victims to ensure their rights and needs are addressed within the justice system.
  • Provide information and referrals to appropriate community resources, including counseling, housing, and financial assistance.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training relevant to victim services and the justice system.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Criminology, Psychology, or a related field
  • Minimum of 24 months of experience in victim services, social work, or a related client-facing support role
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Canadian criminal justice system and court processes
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and active listening skills
  • Strong crisis intervention and de-escalation abilities
  • Proven ability to work with diverse populations, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and empathy
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and case management software
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and professional boundaries
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field
  • Certification in Crisis Intervention or Trauma-Informed Care
  • Fluency in a second language relevant to Calgary's diverse population (e.g., Punjabi, Mandarin, Tagalog, Arabic)
  • Experience working within a police-based or court-based victim services program
  • Knowledge of local community resources in Calgary and the Saddleridge area
