Job Description
The Waste Management Operative role is crucial for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and environmental integrity of the Signal Hill community in Calgary. As a Waste Management Operative, you will be on the front lines, ensuring the efficient and responsible collection, sorting, and disposal of various waste materials. You will play a vital part in our daily operations, directly contributing to the aesthetic appeal and public health of our service areas. Key Responsibilities
- Collect and transport waste and recycling materials from designated residential and commercial locations.
- Operate and maintain waste collection vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently (training provided).
- Sort and separate recyclable materials according to established guidelines.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, reporting any defects or maintenance needs.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and relevant environmental regulations.
- Ensure proper disposal of waste at designated transfer stations or landfills.
- Interact professionally and courteously with residents and the general public.
- Maintain cleanliness of work areas and equipment.
- Assist with other general labour tasks as required.
- Report any issues, hazards, or incidents promptly to supervisors.
Required Skills
- Physical fitness and ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) repeatedly throughout a shift.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow).
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and adherence to safety protocols.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic understanding of English for communication and safety instructions.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean driving record (or equivalent provincial license).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in waste management, general labour, or a similar physically demanding role.
- Familiarity with waste sorting and recycling guidelines.
- Experience operating heavy equipment (e.g., front-end loaders, forkllifts).
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- WHMIS certification.
