Job Description

Hiring.zycto is actively seeking a dedicated and experienced Wildlife Biologist – Field to join our dynamic team in Hintonburg, Ottawa. This critical role involves leading and participating in diverse field studies, research, and monitoring programs focused on wildlife populations and their habitats across Ontario, particularly within the greater Ottawa region. You will be instrumental in collecting high-quality ecological data, conducting detailed habitat assessments, and implementing effective conservation strategies. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and conduct comprehensive wildlife field surveys and data collection using various methodologies.
  • Perform detailed habitat assessments, ecological evaluations, and environmental impact studies.
  • Operate and maintain specialized field equipment, including GPS devices, telemetry units, and camera traps.
  • Analyze collected ecological data using advanced statistical software and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, scientific documentation, and present findings to diverse audiences.
  • Develop and implement effective wildlife management and conservation plans in accordance with provincial and federal regulations.
  • Collaborate effectively with internal project teams, external partners, government agencies, and Indigenous communities.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols, ethical guidelines, and regulatory requirements during all fieldwork activities.
  • Contribute to grant applications and proposal development for new research and conservation initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated expertise in Canadian wildlife identification, ecology, and natural history.
  • Proficiency in diverse field data collection techniques, sampling protocols, and experimental design.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills with attention to detail.
  • Competency with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for mapping, spatial analysis, and data visualization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities for technical reports and presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in challenging outdoor and remote environments.
  • Valid Canadian Class G driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Physical fitness required to perform strenuous fieldwork, including hiking long distances, carrying equipment, and working in various weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Conservation Biology, or a closely related scientific discipline.
  • Professional designation (e.g., R.P.Bio. in British Columbia, or eligibility for similar designations in Ontario).
  • Extensive experience with species-at-risk legislation and permitting processes (e.g., SARA, Ontario ESA).
  • Familiarity with Indigenous traditional ecological knowledge and engagement protocols.
  • Proficiency in statistical software packages (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS) for advanced data analysis.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience operating ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles, or small watercraft.
