Job Description
Hiring.zycto is actively seeking a dedicated and experienced Zoologist for a crucial ‘Animal Care Specialist’ role, based within the distinguished Supreme Court of Canada in Ottawa. This is an unparalleled opportunity to apply advanced zoological principles in a highly sensitive and historically significant urban environment. While not a traditional wildlife sanctuary, this role focuses on the holistic and humane management of all animal life within the Supreme Court’s premises and immediate grounds. This encompasses everything from proactive ecological management to ensuring the well-being of any resident or transient animal populations, and implementing environmentally sound strategies for coexistence and mitigation.
The successful candidate will leverage their deep understanding of animal behaviour, physiology, and ecology to develop and execute innovative care and management plans. This includes implementing best practices for non-lethal pest management through biological and ecological methods, assessing potential impacts of the built environment on local wildlife, and advising on sustainable practices for the grounds. You will be instrumental in maintaining the highest standards of environmental stewardship, ensuring a harmonious balance between the human occupants and the natural world, even within a bustling urban institutional setting. This position calls for a professional with a rigorous scientific mindset, a compassionate approach to animal welfare, and an unwavering commitment to preserving urban biodiversity within a truly unique context.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive ecological surveys and assessments of animal populations (including invertebrates, birds, and small mammals) within the Supreme Court grounds and facilities.
- Develop and implement humane animal management plans, focusing on non-lethal, deterrent-based, and ecologically sound methods for coexistence.
- Monitor animal health and welfare, providing expert advice on intervention strategies when necessary and ensuring ethical standards are met.
- Identify and mitigate potential conflicts between human activity and local wildlife, ensuring minimal environmental impact and promoting biodiversity.
- Educate staff and stakeholders on best practices for environmental stewardship, humane animal interaction, and urban wildlife awareness.
- Maintain detailed records of animal observations, interventions, environmental data, and management plan effectiveness.
- Collaborate with facilities management, security, and horticultural teams to integrate animal care considerations into operational protocols and landscape design.
- Research and recommend innovative solutions for urban wildlife challenges, including biological pest control, habitat enhancement, and sustainable landscape management.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Zoology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in animal care, urban wildlife management, or ecological consulting.
- Demonstrated expertise in humane animal handling and non-lethal population management techniques for diverse species.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian wildlife, particularly species common to urban and institutional environments.
- Excellent observational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with a scientific approach.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, with experience presenting complex scientific information to diverse, non-technical audiences.
- Proficiency in data collection, statistical analysis, and comprehensive report generation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in a relevant zoological or ecological discipline.
- Experience working in sensitive, historical, or high-security institutional environments.
- Certification or extensive experience in integrated pest management with a strong ecological focus.
- Familiarity with federal and provincial environmental regulations and conservation policies in Canada.
- Demonstrated project management experience, particularly in environmental or wildlife initiatives.
Perks & Benefits
- Competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision coverage.
- Opportunity to work in a truly unique and historically significant Canadian institution.
- Generous professional development and continuing education opportunities to advance your expertise.
- A chance to pioneer and implement innovative urban ecological management strategies.
- Supportive, collaborative, and intellectually stimulating work environment.
- Access to a dynamic network of environmental, legal, and operational professionals.
