Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking a passionate and dedicated Union Organizer to join our team in Trenton, New Glasgow. This is a pivotal role for an individual committed to empowering workers, strengthening communities, and advocating for fair labor practices. As a Union Organizer, you will be on the front lines, engaging with employees from diverse backgrounds, understanding their concerns, and guiding them through the process of forming or joining a union. Your work will directly contribute to improving working conditions, wages, and benefits for countless individuals.

This role demands a unique blend of strategic thinking, exceptional communication skills, and unwavering dedication to social justice. You will be responsible for identifying potential organizing opportunities, developing comprehensive campaign strategies, and building strong relationships within the target workplaces and the broader community. This includes conducting one-on-one and group meetings, educating workers about their rights, and inspiring collective action. You will serve as a primary resource for employees seeking to unionize, providing information, support, and guidance every step of the way. Beyond organizing new workplaces, you will also play a crucial role in supporting existing union members, ensuring their voices are heard and their contracts are upheld. This could involve assisting with grievance procedures, educating members on their collective bargaining agreements, and mobilizing support for ongoing campaigns.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and manage strategic organizing campaigns to empower workers and grow union membership.
  • Conduct extensive outreach, including one-on-one meetings, phone calls, and house visits, to engage potential members and build relationships.
  • Educate workers on their rights, the benefits of unionization, and the process of forming a union.
  • Recruit, train, and mentor worker leaders to build internal organizing committees and local union structures.
  • Plan and execute various events, rallies, and informational meetings to build public support and visibility for organizing efforts.
  • Conduct research on employers, industries, and relevant labor laws to inform organizing strategies.
  • Represent the union and workers in various forums, advocating for fair labor practices and collective bargaining rights.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of organizing activities, contacts, and campaign progress.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in community organizing, labor organizing, or advocacy.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to build rapport and trust with diverse groups of people.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategize, plan, and execute campaigns.
  • Proficiency in conflict resolution and problem-solving.
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingualism (English and French) is a significant asset.
  • Knowledge of Canadian labor law and industrial relations.
  • Experience with database management and CRM software.
  • Post-secondary education in Labour Studies, Social Justice, Political Science, or a related field.
  • Previous experience as a union member or activist.
