As a Fisheries Officer, you will play a crucial role in protecting and managing the freshwater and anadromous fish populations and their habitats across the Yukon River watershed and surrounding areas. Your daily activities will be diverse, ranging from conducting field investigations in remote locations to engaging with local Indigenous communities, commercial operators, and recreational fishers. You will be instrumental in ensuring compliance with federal and territorial fisheries legislation, contributing to conservation efforts, and gathering critical data for informed management decisions.

This position demands a robust understanding of fisheries biology, habitat protection, and enforcement principles. You will be expected to operate various equipment, including boats and ATVs, often in challenging weather conditions and remote terrains. Key Responsibilities

  • Enforce federal and territorial fisheries legislation, including the Fisheries Act and its regulations.
  • Conduct patrols and surveillance by vehicle, boat, and on foot in remote and accessible areas to detect and deter illegal fishing activities.
  • Investigate violations, gather evidence, prepare detailed reports, and participate in legal proceedings as required.
  • Perform fish population assessments, habitat surveys, and data collection activities to support management decisions.
  • Engage with Indigenous communities, recreational fishers, and commercial operators to promote compliance and foster stewardship.
  • Deliver public education and awareness programs on fisheries conservation and responsible fishing practices.
  • Respond to and investigate reports of fish kills, habitat degradation, and pollution incidents.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment, including boats, ATVs, snowmobiles, and field sampling gear.
  • Collect biological samples, conduct necropsies, and assist in scientific research projects.
  • Maintain accurate records, manage databases, and prepare comprehensive reports on activities and findings.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and territorial fisheries legislation and environmental regulations.
  • Proficiency in fish identification, fisheries biology, and aquatic habitat assessment techniques.
  • Strong investigative, enforcement, and report writing skills.
  • Ability to operate boats, ATVs, snowmobiles, and other field equipment safely and effectively.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and public relations skills, with an emphasis on conflict resolution.
  • Proficiency in data collection, management, and basic statistical analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging and remote outdoor environments.
  • Valid Class 5 (or equivalent) driver's license.
  • Physical fitness required for extensive fieldwork in varied terrain and weather conditions.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Renewable Resources, Environmental Science, Biology, Fisheries Management, or a related field.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and an understanding of Indigenous rights and traditional ecological knowledge.
  • Experience in law enforcement or regulatory compliance.
  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) certification or equivalent boat handling experience.
  • Knowledge of Yukon's unique ecosystems and local fish species.
  • Experience operating GPS and GIS software for mapping and data analysis.
  • Possession of a firearms license (RPAL/PAL).
