Hiring.zycto is thrilled to partner with the Gardiner Museum, Canada’s national ceramics museum, in search of a dedicated Sound Engineer – Professional. This pivotal role involves overseeing all audio aspects for the museum’s diverse range of exhibitions, public programs, special events, and internal productions. You will be instrumental in creating immersive and pristine auditory environments that enhance visitor experiences and support the artistic vision of the museum.

As our Sound Engineer, you will be crucial in ensuring that every spoken word, musical note, or ambient sound contributes seamlessly to the museum’s narrative and atmosphere. From meticulously setting up complex sound systems for high-profile galas and educational workshops to recording interviews for digital content and maintaining state-of-the-art audio equipment, your expertise will be at the heart of our operations. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, set up, operate, and dismantle professional audio systems for all museum events, exhibitions, and public programs, ensuring optimal sound quality and seamless execution.
  • Perform live sound mixing and monitoring for performances, lectures, presentations, and other on-site events, adjusting levels and effects as required.
  • Record, edit, and master audio content for various museum initiatives, including podcasts, video productions, archival purposes, and digital installations.
  • Conduct regular maintenance, calibration, and inventory of all audio equipment, including microphones, mixers, speakers, amplifiers, and recording devices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical audio issues promptly during live events and daily operations, often under pressure.
  • Collaborate closely with exhibition designers, event managers, curators, and other museum staff to understand their audio needs and provide innovative solutions.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to guest speakers, performers, and external partners regarding audio requirements and best practices.
  • Stay abreast of new audio technologies, software, and industry best practices, recommending upgrades and improvements as appropriate.
  • Ensure all audio installations and operations adhere to safety standards and museum policies.
  • Assist with other Audio-Visual tasks as needed, demonstrating versatility and a team-oriented approach.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in live sound reinforcement, mixing, and recording techniques.
  • Proficiency with professional audio mixing consoles (digital and analog), PA systems, and signal processing equipment.
  • Strong command of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, or Adobe Audition.
  • In-depth knowledge of microphone selection, placement, and acoustics.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting skills for audio hardware and software.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and schematics.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and external stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical ability to lift and move audio equipment up to 50 lbs and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by event schedules.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Audio Engineering, Music Production, Broadcast Technology, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a museum, gallery, theatre, or other cultural/live event venue.
  • Familiarity with network audio protocols (e.g., Dante, AVB).
  • Knowledge of video production and projection systems, as it relates to integrated AV solutions.
  • Certification in relevant audio technologies or safety standards (e.g., AVIXA CTS).
  • Fluency in French is an asset.
