Job Description
Hiring.zycto is actively seeking a passionate and dedicated Community Garden Coordinator for a seasonal term to lead the revitalization and ongoing management of our cherished Deep Cove Community Garden. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in fostering a greener, more connected community right here in North Vancouver. As our Community Garden Coordinator, you will be the heart of our garden, responsible for its daily operations, engaging our vibrant volunteer base, and developing enriching educational programs for all ages. You will work closely with community members, local schools, and partner organizations to ensure the garden thrives as a hub for sustainable living, food production, and social interaction.
This hands-on role requires a blend of horticultural expertise, strong organizational skills, and a genuine love for community building. You will be instrumental in cultivating a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone, from seasoned gardeners to curious beginners, feels empowered to participate and learn. Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Deep Cove Community Garden, including planting, weeding, watering, pest management, and harvesting.
- Recruit, train, supervise, and support a diverse team of garden volunteers, ensuring their active participation and positive experience.
- Develop and implement engaging educational workshops and programs related to gardening, composting, sustainable practices, and food security for various age groups.
- Manage garden resources, including tools, supplies, and budget, ensuring efficient use and procurement.
- Maintain clear communication with garden members, community stakeholders, and Hiring.zycto leadership regarding garden activities and updates.
- Plan and execute garden events, such as planting parties, harvest festivals, and educational open days.
- Monitor garden health, identify potential issues, and implement appropriate organic solutions.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and promote best practices within the garden space.
- Track garden metrics, prepare seasonal reports, and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
Required Skills
- Minimum 1 year of practical experience in organic gardening, horticulture, or agricultural settings.
- Demonstrated experience in volunteer coordination, leadership, or community program facilitation.
- Strong knowledge of plant identification, pest management, soil health, and seasonal planting cycles relevant to BC climate.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in an outdoor, all-weather environment.
- Proficiency with basic office software (e.g., Google Workspace, Microsoft Office) for scheduling and reporting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Horticulture, Environmental Studies, Community Development, or a related field.
- First Aid certification.
- Experience with grant writing or fundraising for community projects.
- Familiarity with local North Vancouver community resources and networks.
- Experience in designing and delivering environmental education programs.
