Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians in examinations, diagnostics, and surgical procedures, including anesthetic monitoring and recovery.
- Perform laboratory procedures such as urinalysis, fecal analysis, hematology, and serology.
- Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
- Provide nursing care to hospitalized patients, including monitoring vital signs, administering fluids, and ensuring comfort.
- Educate pet owners on animal health, nutrition, preventative care, and post-operative instructions.
- Maintain accurate patient records and clinic inventory.
- Prepare surgical suites and instruments, ensuring sterility and proper functioning.
- Assist with dental procedures, including scaling, polishing, and charting.
- Handle and restrain animals safely and humanely, demonstrating patience and understanding.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the clinic environment.
Required Skills
- Associate's degree or diploma from an accredited Veterinary Technology program.
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or eligibility for registration/licensing in Ontario, Canada.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of practical experience as a Veterinary Technician.
- Proficiency in veterinary medical terminology, procedures, and equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to perform venipuncture, catheter placement, and drug calculations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English.
- Compassionate and empathetic approach to animal care and client interaction.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and as part of a team.
- Solid understanding of animal anatomy, physiology, and common diseases.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with advanced imaging techniques (e.g., ultrasound, digital radiography).
- Specialized experience in areas such as emergency/critical care, surgery, or dentistry.
- Familiarity with veterinary practice management software (e.g., Avimark, Cornerstone).
- Additional language proficiency is an asset, given Toronto's diverse population.
- Experience training and mentoring junior staff or students.
