Job Description
We are seeking a highly meticulous and enthusiastic Royalty Accounting Specialist to join our dynamic team in Fresno, California, supporting our esteemed clients within the music industry. As a Royalty Accounting Specialist, you will be instrumental in managing the complex process of calculating, processing, and distributing royalties to artists, songwriters, publishers, and other rights holders. You will work with diverse data sets, contracts, and industry-specific software to ensure accuracy and compliance with contractual agreements and industry standards.
Your day-to-day will involve a deep dive into royalty statements, analyzing revenue streams from various sources such as streaming, sales, licensing, and sync placements. You will reconcile discrepancies, prepare detailed financial reports, and communicate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders regarding royalty inquiries. Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and distribute accurate royalty statements for artists, songwriters, and other rights holders.
- Process and reconcile incoming royalty data from various revenue sources (e.g., streaming platforms, digital retailers, performance rights organizations, sync licenses).
- Interpret and apply complex contractual terms to ensure accurate royalty calculations and payments.
- Investigate and resolve royalty discrepancies, communicating findings clearly to relevant parties.
- Maintain and update royalty accounting systems and databases with current contract information and rates.
- Assist with month-end and year-end close procedures related to royalty accruals and payments.
- Collaborate with legal, business affairs, and A&R departments to understand and implement new contractual terms.
- Generate ad-hoc royalty reports and analysis as required by management or clients.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in royalty accounting, preferably within the music or entertainment industry.
- Proficiency in advanced Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, complex formulas).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated understanding of music industry revenue streams and copyright principles.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA certification or actively pursuing.
- Experience with royalty accounting software (e.g., Vistex, Counterpoint, IPM, custom systems).
- Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Proven ability to interpret legal contracts and apply terms to financial calculations.
