Job Description

Are you a master of illusion, a wizard of practical effects, and a meticulous safety professional with a passion for film? Hiring.zycto is seeking an experienced Special Effects Tech to join our dynamic production team based near the iconic Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. This is an incredible opportunity to contribute your expertise to thrilling film projects, working hands-on to create breathtaking moments that captivate audiences worldwide.

As a Special Effects Tech, you will be instrumental in the planning, setup, execution, and dismantling of a wide array of practical special effects for various film sequences. Your days will be anything but routine, encompassing everything from atmospheric effects like fog, smoke, wind, and rain, to more complex mechanical rigs, pyrotechnics, and squibs. You’ll work closely with directors, cinematographers, stunt coordinators, and other department heads to understand their vision and translate it into safe, effective, and visually stunning realities on set. This involves everything from initial concept meetings and equipment selection to on-set supervision and post-production cleanup of effects elements.

Safety is paramount in everything we do. You will be responsible for strictly adhering to industry best practices, local regulations, and company safety protocols, ensuring all effects are executed without incident. This includes conducting thorough risk assessments, preparing detailed effect breakdowns, and supervising assistants during execution. The role demands a high degree of technical proficiency, creative problem-solving, and the ability to work under pressure in fast-paced, often unpredictable environments. You’ll troubleshoot on the fly, adapt to changing requirements, and meticulously maintain all special effects equipment to the highest standards, ensuring its readiness for immediate deployment.

Beyond the technical skills, we value a strong sense of teamwork and clear communication. You will liaise continuously with the production manager, first assistant director, and department heads to ensure seamless integration of effects into the shooting schedule and creative vision. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of film production workflow and a proactive approach to anticipating challenges and finding innovative solutions.

If you thrive in a collaborative atmosphere where your ingenuity is valued, where every project presents a fresh challenge, and where you get to see your work brought to life on the big screen, then this role is for you. We are looking for someone who is not just technically skilled, but also possesses an artistic eye and a dedication to the craft of filmmaking. Be ready to immerse yourself in the magic of cinema, contributing to stories that resonate and leave a lasting impression. Come build cinematic history with Hiring.zycto.
