Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Preside over trials, hearings, and other legal proceedings in civil, criminal, and family law matters.
  • Interpret and apply federal and provincial laws, statutes, regulations, and legal precedents.
  • Evaluate evidence, assess witness credibility, and make findings of fact.
  • Render reasoned, impartial, and well-articulated judgments and decisions.
  • Ensure fair and equitable treatment for all parties involved in legal proceedings.
  • Manage court calendars and caseloads efficiently, ensuring timely disposition of cases.
  • Maintain decorum and order in the courtroom.
  • Provide clear and concise instructions to juries where applicable.
  • Continuously engage in professional development to stay abreast of legal developments and judicial best practices.
  • Collaborate with court staff, legal professionals, and other stakeholders to facilitate the administration of justice.

Required Skills

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Active membership in good standing with a Provincial or Territorial Law Society in Canada.
  • Minimum of 15 years of extensive legal practice experience, including significant litigation or judicial experience.
  • Profound knowledge of Canadian law, including constitutional law, procedural law, and relevant statutes.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound, impartial, and well-reasoned decisions.
  • Exceptional analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal concepts clearly.
  • Impeccable ethical conduct and personal integrity.
  • Strong judicial temperament, including patience, empathy, and resilience.
  • Ability to manage high-pressure situations and complex emotional dynamics in the courtroom.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a judge, adjudicator, or tribunal member.
  • Specialization or advanced legal qualifications in a specific area of law relevant to the court's jurisdiction.
  • Experience in legal research, scholarship, or teaching.
  • Proficiency in both English and French (an asset in Ottawa, a bilingual city).
  • Demonstrated commitment to community service and engagement.
