Key Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and cook a diverse and nutritious menu for residents, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.
- Accommodate various dietary requirements, allergies, and preferences (e.g., pureed, diabetic, vegetarian, gluten-free meals).
- Ensure all food preparation and storage adhere strictly to HACCP principles and food hygiene regulations.
- Manage kitchen stock, inventory, and order supplies efficiently to minimise waste.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe kitchen environment at all times.
- Monitor and record food temperatures, equipment temperatures, and other safety checks.
- Collaborate with the care team to understand resident needs and preferences, incorporating feedback into menu planning.
- Adhere to budget guidelines for food purchasing and cost control.
- Contribute to creating a positive and welcoming dining atmosphere for residents.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a cook, preferably in a care home or similar institutional setting.
- Proficiency in cooking a range of traditional and contemporary dishes.
- Strong understanding of food hygiene (e.g., Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene for Catering).
- Knowledge of dietary needs for the elderly and special diets, including allergen management.
- Ability to plan menus and manage food stock effectively.
- Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Professional Cookery or equivalent.
- Experience working directly with elderly individuals in a care setting.
- First Aid certification.
- Knowledge of COSHH regulations and their application in a kitchen environment.
