Job Description
This critical leadership role requires a blend of strategic vision, operational excellence, and exceptional relationship-building skills. The Director of Alumni Relations will lead the development and execution of comprehensive alumni engagement programs, ensuring robust connections between the university and its global network of graduates. Reporting to a senior leader within the university’s advancement division, the Director will be responsible for crafting strategies that resonate with a diverse alumni base, cultivating a vibrant culture of lifelong engagement. This involves overseeing all aspects of alumni programming, including high-profile events, targeted communications (digital and print), effective volunteer management, and integrated fundraising initiatives. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for alumni engagement that aligns with the university's mission and advancement goals.
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of alumni relations professionals, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
- Oversee the planning and execution of a diverse portfolio of alumni events, programs, and communications (digital and print) to foster lifelong connections.
- Cultivate and steward relationships with key alumni volunteers, donors, and leaders, identifying opportunities for greater involvement and support.
- Collaborate with the Development office to integrate alumni engagement into fundraising strategies and identify prospective donors.
- Manage the alumni relations budget, ensuring efficient and effective use of resources and demonstrating fiscal responsibility.
- Utilize data analytics to evaluate program effectiveness, identify trends, and inform strategic planning for continuous improvement.
- Serve as a primary liaison between the university and its alumni community, representing the institution at various events and functions.
- Identify and implement innovative approaches to digital alumni engagement and communication to broaden reach and participation.
- Ensure accurate and up-to-date alumni records management within the university's CRM database.
Required Skills
- Proven leadership and management experience (7+ years), preferably within alumni relations or institutional advancement in a university setting.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) for engaging diverse audiences, including alumni, faculty, staff, and donors.
- Strong strategic planning, program development, and project management abilities.
- Demonstrated success in relationship building, cultivation, and donor stewardship.
- Proficiency in CRM systems (e.g., Raiser's Edge, Salesforce) and alumni engagement software.
- Budget management and financial oversight capabilities with a track record of fiscal prudence.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, senior leadership, and external stakeholders.
- Data analysis skills for informed decision-making and performance measurement.
- A deep understanding of the higher education landscape, alumni giving cycles, and best practices in engagement.
- Extensive experience in event planning and execution, from concept to successful delivery.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Higher Education Administration, Non-profit Management, Public Relations, Communications).
- Experience with volunteer management and board development.
- Familiarity with the Toronto philanthropic and higher education community.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing digital engagement strategies and utilizing social media for alumni outreach.
- Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation or equivalent professional certification.
