Key Responsibilities
- Assess patient respiratory status, including physical examination, history taking, and interpretation of diagnostic tests.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized respiratory care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
- Administer respiratory treatments such as aerosolized medications, oxygen therapy, and bronchial hygiene therapies.
- Initiate, monitor, and manage mechanical ventilation, including intubation and extubation procedures where credentialed.
- Perform arterial blood gas sampling and analysis, interpreting results to guide patient management.
- Educate patients and their families on respiratory conditions, medication management, and self-care techniques.
- Operate and maintain a variety of respiratory equipment, ensuring proper function and safety protocols are followed.
- Participate in emergency response codes and provide respiratory support during critical situations.
- Document patient assessments, treatments, and outcomes accurately and thoroughly in electronic health records.
- Engage in continuous professional development and adhere to best practices and regulatory standards.
Required Skills
- Current registration with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO)
- Successful completion of a recognized Respiratory Therapy program
- Active BCLS and ACLS certification
- Minimum 2 years of recent experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist
- Demonstrated ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate respiratory care for diverse patient populations
- Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting respiratory care equipment
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment
Preferred Qualifications
- PALS certification
- Experience in an acute care hospital setting, including ICU, ER, and general wards
- Familiarity with electronic health record systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner)
- Experience with pulmonary function testing and sleep studies
- Commitment to patient safety and quality improvement initiatives
