Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct emotional and practical support to individuals experiencing mental health challenges, adhering to client-centered care principles.
  • Assist clients in developing and implementing personal recovery plans, setting achievable goals, and monitoring progress.
  • Support clients with daily living activities, including meal preparation, personal hygiene, household management, and medication reminders.
  • Facilitate social engagement and community integration through organized activities, outings, and connections to local resources.
  • Monitor clients' well-being, document observations accurately, and report any significant changes or concerns to senior staff promptly.
  • Advocate for clients' rights, needs, and preferences within the healthcare system, social services, and broader community resources.
  • Collaborate effectively and respectfully with a multidisciplinary team, including therapists, social workers, and other support staff, to ensure holistic client care.
  • Promote a safe, supportive, and respectful environment that encourages client independence, dignity, and personal growth.
  • Assist in crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies as required, following established protocols and ensuring client and staff safety.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent credential.
  • Exceptional empathy, patience, and active listening skills with a non-judgmental approach.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) to build rapport with clients and colleagues.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a cohesive team.
  • Basic understanding of mental health conditions, recovery principles, and harm reduction strategies (comprehensive training will be provided).
  • Unwavering commitment to client confidentiality, professional ethics, and adherence to privacy regulations.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to meet program needs.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain within a specified timeframe upon hiring).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer or personal experience supporting individuals with mental health challenges.
  • Enrollment in or completion of a relevant post-secondary program (e.g., Social Service Worker, Community Support Worker, or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of local community resources, support networks, and services available in Toronto for mental health and well-being.
  • Proficiency in a second language relevant to the diverse population of Toronto (e.g., Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi, Tagalog).
  • Valid G Class driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle for client transportation or program activities.
