This role is for a highly skilled and proactive Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic plant operations team in Aberdare, Cardiff. As a critical member, you will be instrumental in ensuring the reliability, safety, and optimal performance of all mechanical plant equipment and systems. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the diagnosis and resolution of complex mechanical failures in plant machinery and critical equipment, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Develop, implement, and refine comprehensive preventative and predictive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend the operational life of assets.
  • Oversee the installation, commissioning, and decommissioning of new mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with specifications and safety standards.
  • Conduct regular inspections, performance assessments, and root cause analyses of all plant equipment, identifying potential risks and areas for continuous improvement.
  • Manage spare parts inventory and procurement for mechanical components, balancing availability with cost-efficiency and supply chain reliability.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all relevant safety regulations, industry standards (e.g., PUWER, LOLER), and environmental policies in all mechanical operations.
  • Collaborate effectively with electrical, process, and production teams to optimize overall plant performance, troubleshoot integrated systems, and improve cross-functional workflows.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and maintenance technicians.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Proven expertise (minimum 4 years) in heavy industrial plant machinery maintenance and repair, preferably in a continuous process environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for complex mechanical systems and fault diagnosis.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) for design, modification, and analysis.
  • Excellent understanding of hydraulic, pneumatic, and rotating equipment principles and operation.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, schematics, P&IDs, and technical manuals.
  • Strong project management and organizational capabilities, with experience managing maintenance projects from conception to completion.
  • Effective communication skills for technical reporting, team collaboration, and liaising with vendors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or actively working towards it.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) such as SAP PM, Maximo, or similar.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) methodologies.
  • Certification in specific industrial equipment or safety standards.
