Key Responsibilities
- Perform all aspects of routine histology procedures, including grossing, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and routine H&E staining.
- Execute special staining techniques (e.g., PAS, GMS, Masson's Trichrome) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures as required.
- Prepare, label, and maintain reagents, solutions, and controls according to laboratory protocols and manufacturer instructions.
- Operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory instruments such as tissue processors, embedders, microtomes, and stainers.
- Conduct quality control (QC) procedures, troubleshoot technical issues, and document all QC activities accurately.
- Maintain meticulous records of specimens, procedures, results, and quality control data in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Adhere strictly to laboratory safety regulations, biohazard handling procedures, and infection control policies.
- Participate in continuing education and professional development activities to maintain competency and stay current with best practices.
- Collaborate effectively with pathologists, laboratory assistants, and other healthcare professionals to ensure efficient workflow and accurate results.
Required Skills
- Certified Histotechnologist (HTL) through ASCP or CSMLS equivalent certification.
- Proven proficiency in all fundamental histology techniques: grossing assistance, processing, embedding, microtomy, and routine staining.
- Comprehensive knowledge of anatomical terminology, pathology principles, and disease processes.
- Exceptional attention to detail and manual dexterity for precise tissue handling and sectioning.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills for troubleshooting technical issues.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective teamwork and collaboration.
- Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently in a high-volume laboratory setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related scientific field.
- Experience with advanced immunohistochemistry (IHC) and molecular pathology techniques.
- Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS) for specimen tracking and data management.
- Previous experience working in an accredited diagnostic laboratory environment.
