Key Responsibilities

  • Perform accurate and meticulous microscopic screening and evaluation of gynecological (Pap tests) and non-gynecological specimens (e.g., fine needle aspirates, effusions, urine, bronchial washings) for cellular abnormalities.
  • Document findings comprehensively, precisely coding diagnoses according to established classification systems (e.g., Bethesda System).
  • Prepare and stain cellular specimens for microscopic examination, ensuring optimal slide quality and integrity.
  • Collaborate effectively with pathologists to discuss unusual or challenging cases, ensuring accurate final diagnoses.
  • Participate in departmental quality control and quality assurance programs, maintaining adherence to accreditation standards and laboratory protocols.
  • Maintain proficiency through ongoing professional development and actively participate in continuing education activities.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, laboratory policies, and provincial/federal guidelines, including the safe handling of biohazardous materials.
  • Operate and perform routine troubleshooting on laboratory equipment pertinent to cytology specimen processing and screening.

Required Skills

  • Active certification as a Cytotechnologist (CTO) with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) or an equivalent recognized credential.
  • Minimum of 2 years of post-certification experience in a diagnostic cytology laboratory, including both gynecological and non-gynecological screening.
  • Exceptional microscopic evaluation skills with a keen eye for detail and pattern recognition.
  • Proficiency in identifying various cellular changes, including inflammatory, reactive, reparative, infectious, dysplastic, and malignant processes.
  • Strong understanding of cytopathology terminology, diagnostic criteria, and reporting guidelines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective collaboration and accurate documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a high-performing team in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Solid knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, quality control procedures, and regulatory compliance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a closely related biological science.
  • Experience with ThinPrep and SurePath liquid-based cytology systems and digital pathology platforms.
  • Familiarity with various Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) relevant to cytology.
  • Specialized training or experience in advanced cytology techniques or molecular testing applications related to cytology.
