As an Excavation Laborer, you will be an indispensable part of our ground-up construction operations, supporting our skilled heavy equipment operators and foremen. Your primary responsibilities will involve a variety of essential tasks crucial for safe and efficient excavation. This includes preparing job sites by clearing debris and setting up barriers, performing manual digging and backfilling with shovels and picks, and ensuring the precise placement of materials. You will be trained on the proper and safe operation of various hand and power tools common in excavation work, such as compaction equipment and small trenchers. Furthermore, maintaining the cleanliness and organization of work areas is key to our operational efficiency and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with manual excavation and backfilling using hand tools such as shovels and picks.
  • Prepare and clean job sites, including clearing debris, setting up safety barriers, and organizing tools and materials.
  • Load and unload materials, supplies, and equipment from trucks.
  • Operate small hand and power tools (e.g., tampers, grinders, saws) as directed by supervisors.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring tools are properly stored and maintained.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols, procedures, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Support heavy equipment operators and skilled trades with various tasks, including spotting and material handling.

Required Skills

  • Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) repeatedly.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and take direction effectively.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
  • Basic understanding of workplace safety or a strong desire to learn and implement safety practices.
  • Effective communication skills for understanding instructions and collaborating with colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid G-class driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Prior experience with any form of manual labor or physically demanding work.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) certification.
  • OSSA Fall Protection or other construction safety certifications.
