Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of complex laboratory tests across different disciplines including Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, and Transfusion Medicine.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot sophisticated laboratory equipment and instrumentation, ensuring optimal performance and accuracy.
  • Analyze and interpret test results, identifying abnormalities and critical values, and reporting them promptly and accurately to medical professionals.
  • Adhere strictly to quality control and quality assurance programs, participating in proficiency testing and maintaining detailed records.
  • Prepare reagents, media, and other solutions according to established protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and accreditation standards (e.g., ISO 15189, CMLTO).
  • Participate in the training and mentorship of junior staff or students, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and laboratory data using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of laboratory processes and methodologies.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
  • Current registration or eligibility for registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).
  • Minimum 2 years of progressive experience as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in a hospital or private laboratory setting.
  • Proficiency in performing tests in at least two major laboratory disciplines (e.g., Hematology and Chemistry).
  • Strong understanding of laboratory quality control and assurance principles.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, in English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) such as Cerner, Meditech, or Epic.
  • Experience with specialized testing methodologies or instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential or experience in training other staff.
  • Proficiency in a second language relevant to Toronto's multicultural population.
