Key Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of complex laboratory tests across different disciplines including Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, and Transfusion Medicine.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot sophisticated laboratory equipment and instrumentation, ensuring optimal performance and accuracy.
- Analyze and interpret test results, identifying abnormalities and critical values, and reporting them promptly and accurately to medical professionals.
- Adhere strictly to quality control and quality assurance programs, participating in proficiency testing and maintaining detailed records.
- Prepare reagents, media, and other solutions according to established protocols.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and accreditation standards (e.g., ISO 15189, CMLTO).
- Participate in the training and mentorship of junior staff or students, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
- Maintain accurate patient records and laboratory data using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of laboratory processes and methodologies.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
- Current registration or eligibility for registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).
- Minimum 2 years of progressive experience as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in a hospital or private laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in performing tests in at least two major laboratory disciplines (e.g., Hematology and Chemistry).
- Strong understanding of laboratory quality control and assurance principles.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, in English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) such as Cerner, Meditech, or Epic.
- Experience with specialized testing methodologies or instrumentation.
- Demonstrated leadership potential or experience in training other staff.
- Proficiency in a second language relevant to Toronto's multicultural population.
