Key Responsibilities

  • Perform decontamination, cleaning, and preparation of surgical instruments and medical devices according to established protocols and manufacturer instructions.
  • Operate and monitor sterilization equipment, including autoclaves, steris machines, and low-temperature sterilizers, ensuring proper functioning and cycle completion.
  • Inspect, assemble, and package instrument trays and individual items for sterilization, ensuring accuracy and integrity.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of sterilization records, biological test results, and inventory logs.
  • Adhere strictly to all infection control policies, safety regulations, and professional standards (e.g., AAMI, CSA).
  • Identify and report any damaged or malfunctioning equipment or instruments promptly.
  • Collaborate effectively with surgical teams, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure timely delivery of sterile instrumentation.
  • Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current with best practices and technological advancements in sterile processing.
  • Manage and organize sterile storage areas, ensuring proper rotation and accessibility of supplies.

Required Skills

  • Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician (e.g., CSA, IAHCSMM, or CBSPD)
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a sterile processing department within a hospital or surgical center setting
  • In-depth knowledge of sterilization methods, decontamination procedures, and infection control principles
  • Proficiency in operating various sterile processing equipment (e.g., automated washers, ultrasonic cleaners, sterilizers)
  • Strong attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
  • Basic computer proficiency for documentation and inventory management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a related healthcare field or equivalent education
  • Experience with electronic tracking systems for surgical instruments
  • Knowledge of surgical instrument names and functions
  • Previous experience in a large acute care hospital setting
