Job Description

The role of a Court Bailiff is integral to the efficient and secure operation of the judicial system. Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain order and decorum within courtrooms and adjacent areas during judicial proceedings.
  • Ensure the safety and security of judges, court personnel, jurors, witnesses, and the public.
  • Escort persons in custody to and from the courtroom, ensuring secure transfers.
  • Administer oaths to witnesses and jurors as required by court protocol.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies or disturbances within the court facility.
  • Enforce rules and regulations established by the court, including managing access and seating.
  • Inspect courtrooms and facilities for security breaches, hazards, or unauthorized items.
  • Facilitate the smooth flow of individuals and materials during court sessions.
  • Liaise with law enforcement and other security personnel as needed.
  • Prepare and submit incident reports regarding disturbances, security breaches, or other notable events.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of legal procedures and court protocols.
  • Excellent observational and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and decisive under pressure.
  • Exceptional verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical fitness to perform duties including standing for extended periods, walking, and potentially restraining individuals.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Clear criminal record check and ability to obtain necessary security clearances.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Criminology, Law and Security, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience as a Bailiff, Court Officer, or in a similar judicial security role.
  • Knowledge of local Hamilton court system procedures and facilities.
  • Tactical communication and de-escalation training.
