Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) through data collection, entry, and initial analysis.
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of infection prevention and control policies and procedures across the organization.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of infection control education and training programs for staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Conduct observational audits to ensure adherence to infection control practices, such as hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, and personal protective equipment (PPE) use.
  • Assist in outbreak investigation and management activities under the direct supervision of senior infection control staff.
  • Contribute to the review and update of infection control manuals, guidelines, and educational materials.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records and documentation related to all infection control activities and surveillance data.
  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including nursing, medical, and environmental services, to promote a robust culture of safety and infection prevention.
  • Stay informed about current infection control guidelines, regulatory requirements, and best practices from provincial, national, and international health authorities.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Public Health, Microbiology, Epidemiology, or a closely related health science field.
  • Strong foundational understanding of basic microbiology, infectious disease transmission, and public health principles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for data management, reporting, and presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as an integral part of a dedicated team.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills, with an aptitude for data interpretation.
  • A strong commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of infection prevention and control.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting through internships, volunteer work, or practicum placements.
  • Basic knowledge of provincial (Ontario) and national infection prevention and control guidelines and standards.
  • Familiarity with public health surveillance systems or electronic health records (EHR) is an asset.
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) or actively working towards certification through IPAC Canada.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is considered an asset for communication with diverse populations.
