Key Responsibilities
- Review and analyze complex mortgage loan applications, including credit reports, income documentation, asset statements, and property appraisals.
- Ensure all loan applications comply with federal, provincial, and company underwriting guidelines and regulations.
- Assess borrower eligibility, credit history, repayment capacity, and collateral to determine overall loan risk.
- Communicate effectively with loan officers, processors, and other parties to gather necessary documentation and clarify information.
- Identify potential risks and mitigating factors, making sound lending decisions with appropriate conditions.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory changes.
- Issue clear and concise approval, suspension, or decline decisions, providing detailed explanations when necessary.
- Manage a pipeline of loans efficiently, prioritizing tasks to meet service level agreements and closing deadlines.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance underwriting expertise.
Required Skills
- Minimum 4 years of experience as a Mortgage Underwriter
- Thorough understanding of mortgage loan products, guidelines (conventional, FHA, VA, jumbo), and regulations in Canada
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with underwriting software and loan origination systems (LOS)
- Ability to work independently and manage a high-volume pipeline in a remote setting
- Sound judgment and decision-making abilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
- Previous experience with a variety of lending programs and complex loan scenarios
- Designation from a recognized mortgage or financial industry association
