Job Description
Hiring.zycto is seeking a dedicated and experienced Water Quality Technician to join our vital municipal operations team in Toronto. This pivotal role involves safeguarding public health by monitoring, testing, and ensuring the highest standards of water quality across our extensive municipal water systems. As a Water Quality Technician, you will be instrumental in maintaining compliance with provincial and federal regulations, identifying potential contaminants, and contributing to the continuous improvement of our water treatment processes. You will work within a dynamic environment, utilizing advanced scientific equipment and methodologies to perform critical analyses of water samples from various sources, including treatment plants, distribution networks, and environmental monitoring sites. Key Responsibilities
- Collect water samples from various municipal sources including treatment plants, reservoirs, distribution points, and environmental sites.
- Conduct a comprehensive range of physical, chemical, and microbiological analyses on water samples using standard laboratory procedures and specialized equipment.
- Operate and maintain laboratory instruments, ensuring proper calibration, cleanliness, and functionality.
- Accurately record, interpret, and report analytical results, identifying any deviations from established quality standards or regulatory limits.
- Assist in the investigation of water quality complaints and incidents, including root cause analysis and corrective action recommendations.
- Monitor water treatment processes and provide technical support to optimize performance and efficiency.
- Prepare reagents, media, and other solutions required for laboratory testing.
- Ensure strict adherence to all health, safety, and environmental protocols and regulations.
- Maintain detailed documentation of all sampling, testing, and quality control activities.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for water quality monitoring and analysis.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in water sampling techniques and field testing equipment.
- Strong understanding of water chemistry, microbiology, and relevant analytical methods.
- Experience with laboratory instrumentation (e.g., spectrophotometers, pH meters, turbidimeters, GC/MS).
- Familiarity with provincial (e.g., O. Reg. 170/03) and federal drinking water quality standards and regulations.
- Excellent data recording, analysis, and reporting skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot laboratory equipment and processes.
- Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various environmental conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering Technology, Microbiology, or a related field.
- Certification as a Water Quality Analyst or equivalent professional designation.
- Experience working within a municipal water utility or similar regulated environment.
- Knowledge of Quality Management Systems (e.g., ISO 17025).
- Proficiency in statistical analysis software and LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems).
