Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking enthusiastic and skilled Canoe Guides to lead unforgettable summer experiences in the beautiful Clanton Park area and surrounding Toronto waterways. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals passionate about outdoor recreation, environmental education, and fostering a love for nature in participants of all ages and skill levels. As a Canoe Guide, you will be the heart of our summer programs, responsible for guiding groups safely through various canoe excursions, providing clear instruction on paddling techniques, and sharing engaging insights about local flora, fauna, and waterways. Your role will involve ensuring the well-being and enjoyment of every participant, from beginners to more experienced paddlers. You will manage equipment, maintain a positive and inclusive atmosphere, and respond effectively to any on-water situations. This position offers a dynamic work environment where no two days are quite the same, allowing you to combine your love for paddling with your leadership and educational skills. Key Responsibilities

  • Safely lead groups of varying ages and skill levels on canoe excursions across designated Toronto waterways, including route planning and navigation.
  • Provide comprehensive instruction on basic and intermediate canoeing techniques, water safety, and environmental best practices.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip briefings, including safety protocols, equipment usage, and trip itineraries.
  • Ensure all participants adhere to safety regulations and company policies throughout the duration of the trip.
  • Perform routine checks and maintenance of canoes, paddles, life jackets, and other safety equipment.
  • Deliver engaging interpretive talks on local ecology, wildlife, and historical significance of the paddling routes.
  • Manage group dynamics, foster a positive and inclusive environment, and provide support to participants as needed.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies, including capsizes, injuries, or adverse weather conditions, demonstrating strong decision-making skills.
  • Complete all necessary administrative duties, including participant waivers, incident reports, and post-trip debriefs.

Required Skills

  • Proven proficiency in canoeing techniques and water safety.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification.
  • Demonstrated leadership and group management abilities.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities in dynamic environments.
  • Physical fitness to paddle for extended periods and lift/carry canoes and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a canoe guide, camp counselor, or outdoor educator.
  • ORCKA (Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association) Basic Canoeing Instructor certification or equivalent.
  • Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification.
  • Knowledge of local Toronto waterways and natural history.
  • Possession of a valid G Class driver's license with a clean driving record.
