Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough research and gather information on local news, events, and community issues within New Orleans, with a specific focus on the Lower Ninth Ward.
  • Interview sources, witnesses, and community members to obtain accurate and compelling information.
  • Write clear, concise, and engaging news stories, features, and reports for various media platforms (digital, print, audio/visual).
  • Develop and maintain a network of credible sources and contacts within the community.
  • Attend press conferences, public meetings, and community events as required.
  • Collaborate closely with editors, photographers, and videographers to produce high-quality journalistic content.
  • Verify facts, data, and information through multiple sources to ensure accuracy and journalistic integrity.
  • Adhere strictly to ethical journalistic practices and company editorial guidelines.
  • Proactively pitch new story ideas and investigate leads to uncover unique local narratives.
  • Utilize social media and digital tools for reporting, promotion, and community engagement.

  • Experience with college newspaper, radio, or multimedia projects.
  • Basic understanding of journalistic ethics and media law.
  • Familiarity with the history, culture, and social dynamics of New Orleans, particularly the Lower Ninth Ward.
  • Proficiency in basic photography or videography for newsgathering purposes.
