Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking a dedicated and experienced Environmental Lawyer to join our passionate team in High Park-Swansea, Toronto. This pivotal role involves leading and supporting legal initiatives focused on environmental protection, conservation, and policy advocacy. The successful candidate will be instrumental in conducting extensive legal research, drafting briefs, providing expert advice on complex environmental law matters, and representing our organization in various administrative and public forums. You will work on critical issues ranging from biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation to pollution control, land use planning, and Indigenous environmental rights.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth legal research and analysis on complex environmental law issues, including federal, provincial, and municipal regulations and international agreements.
  • Draft comprehensive legal briefs, policy papers, submissions to regulatory bodies, and other legal documents to support advocacy campaigns and litigation.
  • Represent Hiring.zycto in administrative hearings, public consultations, and potentially court proceedings related to environmental matters.
  • Provide expert legal advice and strategic guidance to the organization's leadership, program managers, and community partners on various environmental issues.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments in environmental law and assess their potential impact on the organization's mission and ongoing projects.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including scientists, policy analysts, and community organizers, to develop comprehensive environmental protection strategies.
  • Engage with government officials, industry representatives, and other stakeholders to advocate for stronger environmental policies and enforcement.
  • Develop and deliver public presentations, workshops, and educational materials on environmental law topics for diverse audiences.
  • Assist in fundraising efforts by contributing legal insights to grant proposals and reporting on legal initiatives' progress and impact.

Required Skills

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Minimum of 4 years of post-call experience practicing environmental law, preferably within an NGO, public interest organization, or government setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Canadian federal and provincial environmental legislation, common law principles, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Exceptional legal research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, with the capacity to articulate complex legal concepts clearly and persuasively.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
  • Strong advocacy, negotiation, and public speaking skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Environmental Law or a related field.
  • Experience with Indigenous legal traditions, environmental justice issues, or land rights.
  • Familiarity with international environmental law and conventions.
  • Proven track record of successful litigation or policy reform initiatives.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is considered a significant asset.
  • Experience in public engagement and media relations.
