Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Train Engineer to join our operations team in Côte-Saint-Luc, Montreal. This full-time role offers an exciting opportunity to be at the controls of our modern fleet, ensuring the safe and efficient transport of goods and passengers across our extensive network. As a Train Engineer, you will be a vital link in Canada’s supply chain and public transportation system, responsible for adhering to strict operational protocols and maintaining an unwavering commitment to safety.

Your day-to-day will involve meticulously inspecting locomotives, conducting pre-trip and post-trip checks, and executing precise maneuvers to couple and uncouple cars. You will interpret signals, track warrants, and other operational directives with critical accuracy, communicating effectively with dispatchers, conductors, and other crew members. The role demands keen situational awareness, quick decision-making, and the ability to adapt to varying weather conditions and track environments. Key Responsibilities

  • Operate locomotives safely and efficiently, adhering to all railway operating rules, regulations, and company policies.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of locomotives and associated equipment.
  • Interpret and respond accurately to signals, track warrants, and other operational directives.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with dispatchers, conductors, and other crew members via radio and other systems.
  • Manage train speed, braking, and power to ensure smooth and safe movement of freight or passenger cars.
  • Perform coupling and uncoupling of rail cars, ensuring proper securement.
  • Monitor train performance, fuel consumption, and report any mechanical issues or irregularities.
  • Maintain accurate logs and reports related to train operations, incidents, and delays.
  • Adhere to strict safety protocols, including hazardous material handling and emergency procedures.
  • Participate in ongoing training and safety briefings to maintain up-to-date knowledge and certifications.

Required Skills

  • Certified Train Engineer (Locomotive Engineer) qualification.
  • Minimum of 4 years (48 months) of direct experience as a Train Engineer.
  • Valid Class 1 driver's license (or equivalent) with a clean driving record.
  • In-depth knowledge of railway operating rules, signals, and safety regulations.
  • Proficiency in operating various types of locomotives and associated railway equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, in English (French is an asset).
  • Ability to make critical decisions quickly and effectively under pressure.
  • High level of physical fitness, including ability to climb, lift, and work in various weather conditions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and adherence to operational procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingualism (English and French).
  • Experience with different rail networks or specialized cargo.
  • Familiarity with modern locomotive control systems and diagnostic tools.
  • Advanced first aid and CPR certification.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or mentoring role within a rail environment.
