Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking a passionate and dedicated Entry-Level Archaeologist to join our growing team in Westbrook, Maine. As an Entry-Level Archaeologist, you will play a crucial role in various archaeological projects, contributing to all phases of investigation from initial surveys to final reporting. Your work will primarily involve fieldwork, which may include pedestrian surveys, shovel test pit excavation, and full-scale data recovery excavations across diverse landscapes. Beyond the excitement of the field, you will also contribute to laboratory tasks, including artifact washing, cataloging, and basic analysis, ensuring the systematic organization and preservation of our findings. This role offers exposure to the full spectrum of cultural resource management (CRM) archaeology, providing a comprehensive understanding of regulatory compliance, research design, and public outreach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in archaeological field surveys, excavations, and monitoring activities under supervision.
  • Accurately record and document archaeological findings, including features, stratigraphy, and artifacts, through detailed notes, sketches, and photographic logs.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment such as shovels, trowels, screens, and GPS devices safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with the processing and preliminary analysis of artifacts in the laboratory, including washing, sorting, cataloging, and basic identification.
  • Contribute to the preparation of site forms, daily field reports, and other project-related documentation.
  • Adhere strictly to all project-specific safety protocols, cultural resource management regulations, and ethical guidelines.
  • Collaborate effectively with project managers, field directors, and fellow team members to achieve project objectives.
  • Learn and apply standard archaeological methodologies, data collection techniques, and analytical approaches.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, both in the field and in the lab.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, or a closely related field.
  • Fundamental understanding of archaeological principles and field methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately record field data (e.g., note-taking, mapping, photography).
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous outdoor work in various weather conditions and terrains.
  • Strong observational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited archaeological field school.
  • Prior experience with artifact identification, processing, or curation.
  • Basic knowledge of cultural resource management (CRM) laws and regulations (e.g., NHPA, NEPA).
  • Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for mapping and data management.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Experience operating 4×4 vehicles or ATVs in off-road conditions.
