Key Responsibilities
- Assess client needs, interests, and abilities to develop individualized recreational therapy treatment plans.
- Implement a wide range of therapeutic recreation interventions, including arts and crafts, music, sports, games, community outings, and adaptive recreation.
- Monitor and document client progress, adjusting treatment plans as necessary to meet evolving needs and goals.
- Collaborate effectively with an interdisciplinary team, including physicians, nurses, social workers, and other therapists, to ensure coordinated and holistic client care.
- Educate clients and their families on the benefits of recreational activities for health and well-being.
- Maintain a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment for all recreational therapy sessions.
- Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and professional development activities.
- Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and relevant professional standards and ethical guidelines.
- Assist in the development and facilitation of group recreational therapy programs.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Recreational Therapy or a related field (e.g., Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology with a specialization in Therapeutic Recreation).
- Current certification or eligibility for certification with the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association (CTRA) or provincial equivalent (e.g., TRO).
- Strong understanding of therapeutic recreation principles, theories, and practices.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Demonstrated empathy, patience, and a client-centered approach.
- Basic computer proficiency for documentation and communication.
- Ability to plan, organize, and lead diverse recreational activities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior volunteer or practicum experience in a healthcare or community setting.
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the diverse Toronto community.
