Job Description

As a Night Shift ER Nurse, you will provide comprehensive assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care, ensuring adherence to established protocols and standards. You will be responsible for rapid triage, stabilization, and ongoing monitoring of patients, administering medications, performing wound care, assisting with medical procedures, and interpreting diagnostic tests. The night shift offers a unique challenge, requiring heightened vigilance and self-reliance, yet it also presents a profound opportunity to impact patients during their most vulnerable hours.

Beyond direct patient care, you will act as a vital link between patients, their families, and the wider healthcare team. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform rapid and accurate patient assessment, triage, and prioritization in a high-acuity environment.
  • Implement and evaluate patient care plans, including medication administration, wound care, and medical procedures.
  • Monitor vital signs, interpret diagnostic test results, and communicate critical changes to physicians.
  • Provide stabilization and ongoing care for patients experiencing a wide range of medical emergencies.
  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, specialists, and support staff.
  • Educate patients and families on conditions, treatment plans, and discharge instructions with empathy and clarity.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient records, ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards.
  • Participate in emergency drills, quality improvement initiatives, and continuous professional development.
  • Demonstrate strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities under pressure.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and safety protocols, particularly during night operations.

Required Skills

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ontario, in good standing.
  • Minimum 3 years of recent experience in an Emergency Department setting.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Exceptional critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a high-performing team during night shifts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong patient advocacy and compassionate care delivery.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification.
  • Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) certification in Emergency Nursing.
  • Experience with precepting or mentoring junior staff.
  • Proficiency in a second language relevant to the Toronto community.
