Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate Class 1 commercial vehicles, often pulling specialized or oversized loads, across frozen waterways and winter roads.
- Perform pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections on vehicles, equipment, and cargo to ensure mechanical fitness, safety, and secure load.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, government regulations, and industry best practices for ice road operations.
- Monitor road and weather conditions continuously, adapting driving techniques as required to navigate challenging terrain and extreme temperatures.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, manifests, and electronic logging device (ELD) records in accordance with federal and provincial regulations.
- Perform minor mechanical adjustments and emergency repairs as needed in remote conditions.
- Communicate regularly with dispatch and support teams regarding progress, potential issues, and arrival times.
- Ensure timely and efficient delivery of critical goods to remote northern communities.
Required Skills
- Valid Class 1/A driver's license with an excellent driving abstract.
- Minimum of 5 years (60 months) verifiable experience operating heavy commercial vehicles in challenging winter conditions.
- Proven ability to perform pre-trip inspections, basic vehicle maintenance, and minor roadside repairs.
- Strong understanding of load securement principles for various cargo types.
- Exceptional decision-making skills and ability to work independently in isolated environments.
- Proficiency in electronic logging devices (ELDs) and navigation systems.
- Adaptability and resilience to extreme cold, long hours, and demanding seasonal work schedules.
- Fluency in English (written and spoken) for communication and documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience specifically on ice roads or remote winter haul roads.
- Mechanical aptitude and experience with diesel engines and specialized trucking equipment.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Experience with oversized or overweight load transportation.
- Familiarity with northern Canadian geography and logistical challenges.
