Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counseling to students regarding personal, social, emotional, and academic concerns, under supervision.
- Assist in the development and implementation of guidance programs, workshops, and classroom presentations focused on career exploration, study skills, and social-emotional learning.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other school staff to support student success and well-being, ensuring a holistic approach to student development.
- Participate in crisis intervention and conflict resolution, offering immediate support to students in distress and connecting them with appropriate resources.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with school policies and ethical guidelines.
- Refer students and families to external community resources and mental health services when appropriate, facilitating smooth transitions and continuity of care.
- Contribute to a positive school culture by promoting empathy, respect, and inclusivity among students.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and supervision to enhance counseling skills and knowledge of best practices.
- Assist with standardized testing coordination and interpretation, as well as college and career planning resources for students.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field (or equivalent experience for entry-level).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, staff, and parents.
- Demonstrated empathy, active listening, and problem-solving abilities.
- Basic understanding of child and adolescent development, mental health, and educational challenges.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to cultural competence and an inclusive approach to counseling.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for record-keeping.
Preferred Qualifications
- Provisional or initial certification/licensure as a School Counselor (if applicable in Scotland).
- Familiarity with local educational policies and support services in Edinburgh.
- Experience with restorative practices or social-emotional learning curricula.
- Proficiency in using student information systems and basic office software.
- First Aid and Mental Health First Aid certification.
