Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Employee Relations Manager to join a dynamic team, playing a pivotal role in fostering a positive and productive work environment. This professional will be instrumental in ensuring fair and consistent application of company policies, resolving workplace conflicts, and promoting strong employee-management relationships within a unique institutional setting – the Toronto Railway Museum. The successful candidate will be a trusted advisor to management and employees, providing expert guidance on a wide range of employee relations matters, including performance management, disciplinary actions, grievance resolution, and compliance with employment legislation.
This role requires a proactive individual with a deep understanding of HR best practices and a proven ability to navigate complex interpersonal situations with tact and professionalism. You will be responsible for conducting thorough and impartial investigations into workplace complaints, developing effective strategies to prevent disputes, and facilitating constructive dialogue. Beyond reactive problem-solving, you will contribute to the strategic development of HR policies and programs that align with the organization’s values and operational goals. Key Responsibilities
- Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues, including investigations into harassment, discrimination, and other workplace complaints.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to managers and employees on HR policies, procedures, and employment legislation (e.g., Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code).
- Develop, interpret, and ensure consistent application of HR policies and procedures.
- Facilitate conflict resolution and mediation sessions between employees and/or management.
- Oversee and guide performance management processes, including performance improvement plans and disciplinary actions.
- Conduct exit interviews and analyze data to identify trends and areas for improvement in employee relations.
- Deliver training sessions to managers and employees on topics such as conflict resolution, harassment prevention, and performance management.
- Stay current with changes in employment law and HR best practices to ensure organizational compliance.
- Partner with legal counsel when necessary on complex employee relations cases.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of initiatives aimed at enhancing employee engagement and workplace culture.
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in Employee Relations or a similar HR specialized role.
- Demonstrated expertise in conducting workplace investigations and conflict resolution.
- Thorough knowledge of Canadian and Ontario employment laws and regulations (e.g., ESA, OHRC).
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
- Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- CHRP/CHRL designation.
- Experience working within the non-profit, cultural, or museum sector.
- Master's degree in Human Resources or a related discipline.
- Experience with HRIS systems and data analytics for ER trend identification.
