Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking a dedicated Academic Advisor to join our vibrant team in Don Valley Village, Toronto. This pivotal role involves guiding university students through their academic journeys, ensuring they make informed decisions about courses, programs, and career paths. You will be the first point of contact for many students, providing comprehensive advice on academic policies, degree requirements, registration processes, and available support services.

You will work with a diverse student population, ranging from first-year undergraduates navigating new academic landscapes to seasoned students planning their post-graduate futures. This position requires a proactive approach to advising, including developing and delivering workshops, creating helpful resources, and collaborating closely with faculty and other student support units to ensure a cohesive and supportive student experience. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive academic advising to university students, individually and in groups, regarding degree requirements, course selection, academic policies, and campus resources.
  • Assist students in developing personalized academic plans, including major/minor exploration, course sequencing, and graduation planning.
  • Monitor student academic progress, identify students facing challenges, and intervene with appropriate support, referrals, and solutions.
  • Interpret and explain complex academic policies and procedures clearly and accurately to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Develop and deliver engaging workshops and presentations on topics such as academic planning, time management, study skills, and career pathways.
  • Collaborate effectively with faculty, departmental chairs, and other student support services (e.g., career services, mental health services, accessibility services) to ensure holistic student support.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with institutional and privacy regulations.
  • Stay current with best practices in academic advising, university curriculum changes, and relevant educational technologies.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in academic advising or student services within a university setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of university academic policies, procedures, and degree requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a high volume of student interactions and administrative tasks.
  • Proficiency in student information systems (e.g., Banner, PeopleSoft, Slate) and Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with diverse student populations, including international students and students with disabilities.
  • Familiarity with career development theories and resources to guide students in career exploration.
  • Experience in developing and delivering engaging educational content or workshops.
  • Certification or active participation in professional advising associations (e.g., NACADA).
