Key Responsibilities
- Respond to calls regarding stray, injured, distressed, or aggressive animals, including domestic pets and wildlife.
- Investigate animal cruelty, neglect, and abandonment complaints, gathering evidence and preparing detailed reports for potential legal action.
- Enforce municipal bylaws related to animal ownership, licensing, leash laws, and nuisance animals.
- Safely capture, contain, and transport animals using appropriate equipment and techniques.
- Provide basic care and assessment for animals impounded, including feeding, watering, and observing for signs of illness or injury.
- Educate the public on responsible pet ownership, animal welfare regulations, and coexisting with wildlife.
- Maintain accurate records of calls, investigations, impoundments, adoptions, and euthanizations.
- Collaborate with veterinary clinics, animal shelters, law enforcement, and other community partners.
- Participate in public awareness campaigns and community outreach events.
- Handle deceased animals according to established procedures.
- Testify in court or at tribunals regarding bylaw infractions or animal cruelty cases when required.
Required Skills
- Minimum 2 years of experience in animal handling, animal welfare, or law enforcement.
- Strong knowledge of animal behavior, common diseases, and humane handling techniques.
- Proficiency in municipal bylaws related to animal control and relevant provincial/federal legislation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and public interaction.
- Demonstrated ability to de-escalate conflict and handle stressful situations with professionalism and empathy.
- Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, exercising sound judgment in diverse situations.
- Physical fitness to safely lift and restrain animals (up to 50 lbs), stand, walk, and run for extended periods in various weather conditions.
- Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping and data entry.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Animal Care, Law Enforcement, Criminology, or a related field.
- Certification in Animal First Aid and CPR.
- Experience with wildlife capture and relocation.
- Knowledge of impoundment procedures and shelter operations.
- Bilingualism (English and other common languages spoken in Toronto).
