Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking a diligent and experienced Food Safety Inspector to join our dedicated team in Barrhaven, Ottawa. This crucial full-time role involves safeguarding public health by ensuring adherence to stringent food safety regulations and standards across various food establishments. As a Food Safety Inspector, you will be on the front lines, conducting comprehensive inspections, identifying potential hazards, and working collaboratively with businesses to implement corrective actions. You will be instrumental in upholding the integrity of the food supply chain, providing expert guidance on best practices, and enforcing compliance with federal, provincial, and municipal food safety legislation.

This position requires a keen eye for detail, strong analytical capabilities, and excellent communication skills to articulate findings clearly and constructively. You will be responsible for meticulously documenting inspection results, preparing detailed reports, and participating in follow-up activities to verify compliance. The successful candidate will play a vital role in educating food handlers, responding to food safety complaints, and contributing to ongoing initiatives that enhance public awareness and compliance. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct scheduled and unscheduled inspections of food establishments, including restaurants, grocery stores, food processing plants, and food service operations, to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and standards.
  • Identify, assess, and document food safety hazards and violations, providing clear and actionable recommendations for corrective measures.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, maintain accurate records, and issue warnings, notices, or orders as required by regulatory guidelines.
  • Investigate foodborne illness outbreaks, consumer complaints, and other food safety incidents, collecting samples for laboratory analysis when necessary.
  • Provide guidance and education to food establishment operators and staff on best practices in food handling, sanitation, hazard analysis, and critical control points (HACCP) principles.
  • Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions taken by establishments to resolve identified deficiencies.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, public health officials, and industry stakeholders to promote a culture of food safety excellence.
  • Stay current with changes in food safety legislation, scientific advancements, and industry best practices through continuous professional development.
  • Participate in enforcement actions and legal proceedings when necessary, providing expert testimony.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in food safety inspection, quality assurance, or a related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Public Health, Environmental Health, or a related discipline.
  • Thorough knowledge of Canadian food safety regulations (e.g., Safe Food for Canadians Regulations, Ontario Food Safety Act).
  • Proven ability to conduct detailed inspections and identify critical food safety hazards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on practical solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of preparing clear reports and delivering effective training.
  • Proficiency in using inspection software and standard office applications.
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation for site visits.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Certification in HACCP principles and implementation.
  • Experience with SQF, BRC, or other GFSI recognized standards.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
  • Experience working with diverse food industry sectors.
