Job Description

Are you a seasoned Linux System Administrator with a passion for building, maintaining, and optimising robust, scalable, and secure Linux environments? Hiring.zycto is expanding its remote team and seeking a dedicated professional to take ownership of our critical server infrastructure. This fully remote role offers the flexibility to work from your preferred location within the UK, collaborating with a distributed team of engineers and developers.

As a Linux System Administrator, you will be instrumental in ensuring the high availability, performance, and security of our Linux-based systems. You’ll work across various distributions, including Ubuntu, CentOS, and Alpine, leveraging your expertise in scripting, automation, and cloud technologies. Your daily responsibilities will involve proactive system monitoring, incident response, capacity planning, and implementing security best practices. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain highly available and scalable Linux server infrastructure.
  • Perform proactive monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolution of system issues to ensure optimal performance and uptime.
  • Automate routine operational tasks using scripting languages (Bash, Python) and configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
  • Manage and maintain virtualisation platforms (e.g., VMware, KVM) and cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Implement and enforce security policies, best practices, and patching strategies for all Linux systems.
  • Manage network services (DNS, DHCP, VPN) and firewall rules.
  • Oversee backup and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to development and QA teams.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for critical incidents.
  • Document system configurations, processes, and procedures.

Required Skills

  • 5+ years of experience as a Linux System Administrator or DevOps Engineer.
  • Expertise with multiple Linux distributions (Ubuntu, CentOS/RHEL, Alpine).
  • Proficiency in shell scripting (Bash) and at least one other scripting language (Python, Ruby, Perl).
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, VPN, Firewalls).
  • Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
  • Familiarity with virtualisation technologies (VMware, KVM, Docker).
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Solid understanding of security best practices for Linux systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., LPIC, RHCE, AWS Certified SysOps Administrator).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI).
  • Knowledge of monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Nagios).
  • Experience with containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
  • Previous experience in a fully remote work environment.
