Key Responsibilities
- Lead clients safely and effectively on multi-day mountain hiking, trekking, and wilderness expeditions.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip briefings, including safety protocols, equipment checks, and route overviews.
- Assess and manage risks associated with dynamic mountain environments, including weather, terrain, and group capabilities.
- Provide clear, concise instruction on proper trekking techniques, equipment use, and Leave No Trace principles.
- Maintain a high level of physical fitness and be prepared for challenging conditions and long working hours.
- Deliver engaging interpretive commentary on natural history, geology, wildlife, and cultural significance of the regions visited.
- Administer wilderness first aid as required and manage emergency situations efficiently.
- Ensure all guiding activities comply with company policies, local regulations, and industry best practices.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to maintain and enhance guiding skills and certifications.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive group dynamic, enhancing the overall client experience.
Required Skills
- Valid Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification.
- Minimum 2 years (24 months) of demonstrated experience leading groups in wilderness or mountain environments.
- Proficiency in wilderness navigation (map, compass, GPS).
- Strong leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse client groups.
- Thorough knowledge of Leave No Trace ethics and environmental stewardship practices.
- Exceptional physical fitness and endurance for sustained outdoor activity.
- Ability to adapt to changing weather conditions and challenging terrain.
Preferred Qualifications
- Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) Apprentice Hiking or Hiking Guide certification, or equivalent.
- Certification in Swiftwater Rescue, Ice Safety, or Avalanche Safety (AST 1 or higher).
- Experience with multi-day backcountry camping and expedition logistics.
- Knowledge of local flora, fauna, and geological features of Canadian wilderness areas.
- Proficiency in a second language (e.g., French, German, Mandarin) is an asset.
