As a Sleep Technician Trainee, you will work under the close supervision of experienced Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (RPSGTs) and Sleep Physicians. Your journey will begin with a comprehensive introduction to sleep study procedures, patient preparation, and the intricate technology used in our state-of-the-art sleep lab. You’ll learn how to accurately apply electrodes, calibrate equipment, monitor patients overnight, and troubleshoot technical issues, all while ensuring patient comfort and safety. This role is more than just technical skill; it’s about compassionate patient care, meticulous data collection, and understanding the nuances of sleep architecture.

You will play a vital role in helping diagnose and treat various sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome. This hands-on training will include understanding sleep stages, recognizing abnormal physiological events, and documenting observations in detail. Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in comprehensive training programs on polysomnography procedures and equipment.
  • Under supervision, prepare patients for sleep studies, including electrode application and equipment setup.
  • Monitor patients during overnight sleep studies, ensuring comfort and technical accuracy.
  • Observe and accurately document physiological data and patient behaviors during studies.
  • Learn to identify and respond to common artifacts and technical issues during data acquisition.
  • Assist with equipment calibration, maintenance, and inventory.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment.
  • Adhere strictly to patient privacy (PHI) and safety protocols.
  • Participate in daily debriefs and learning sessions with senior technologists and physicians.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Strong willingness and aptitude for learning new technical skills and medical concepts
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions
  • Compassionate and empathetic communication skills for patient interaction
  • Basic computer literacy and ability to navigate software systems
  • Reliability and commitment to a consistent overnight work schedule
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in healthcare, anatomy, physiology, or related sciences
  • Previous customer service or patient care experience (volunteer or paid)
  • Some post-secondary coursework in a health-related field is an asset
