Job Description

Hiring.zycto is on the lookout for a highly motivated and detail-oriented Commercial Estimator Trainee to join our growing team in Toronto. This is an exceptional entry-level opportunity for an individual passionate about the construction industry, eager to learn the intricate art of commercial project estimation from the ground up. As a Trainee, you will work closely with our experienced Senior Estimators, gaining hands-on experience in preparing accurate and competitive bids for a variety of commercial construction projects, including residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional sectors.

Your journey with us will involve developing a strong understanding of blueprints, specifications, and other project documentation to quantify materials, labour, and equipment needs. You’ll learn how to solicit and review quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, understand cost analysis, and contribute to the preparation of comprehensive tender submissions. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Senior Estimators in preparing detailed cost estimates for commercial construction projects.
  • Learn to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and project proposals.
  • Conduct quantity take-offs for various construction components (materials, labour, equipment).
  • Support the solicitation and review of bids from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Maintain and update a comprehensive database of material costs and subcontractor pricing.
  • Participate in tender preparation, including compiling documentation and completing forms.
  • Attend project site visits and pre-bid meetings to gain a deeper understanding of project scope and conditions.
  • Collaborate with project managers, architects, and engineers as required.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of estimating processes and tools.
  • Perform general administrative tasks to support the estimating department.

Required Skills

  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical documents and drawings.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management abilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, Quantity Surveying, or a related field.
  • Prior exposure to construction terminology or processes (e.g., through internships, volunteer work, or academic projects).
  • Familiarity with estimating software (e.g., On-Screen Takeoff, Bluebeam, AccuBid) is an asset but not required.
  • Valid G-class driver's license and access to a vehicle.
