Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough research, interviews, and fact-checking to gather accurate and comprehensive information for news stories and features.
  • Write, edit, and produce clear, concise, and engaging news stories, features, and reports tailored for various platforms, including radio, television, and online.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with community contacts, sources, local officials, and stakeholders to cultivate compelling story leads.
  • Cover breaking news, live events, press conferences, and scheduled assignments with professionalism, urgency, and precision.
  • Operate broadcast equipment, digital cameras, audio recorders, and other journalistic tools for recording and live reporting as required.
  • Generate original and impactful story ideas that are relevant to and resonate with the Abbotsford community and the broader British Columbia region.
  • Collaborate effectively with producers, editors, photographers, and other team members to ensure cohesive, high-quality broadcasts and digital publications.
  • Adhere strictly to all journalistic ethics, media legal standards, and CBC editorial policies and guidelines.
  • Participate in community outreach and engagement activities as a representative of the news organization, fostering positive public relations.
  • Contribute to social media engagement and digital content strategy to maximize audience reach and interaction.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience as a journalist, reporter, or similar role in a news environment.
  • Proven ability to research, write, and produce compelling news stories and content for multiple platforms (print, digital, audio, visual).
  • Excellent interviewing, investigative reporting, and storytelling abilities.
  • Strong understanding of journalistic ethics, media law, and editorial guidelines.
  • Proficiency in modern newsgathering techniques and tools, including digital recording and editing software.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, manage multiple assignments, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle for fieldwork and on-location assignments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Abbotsford and British Columbia social, political, economic, and cultural landscape.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Journalism or a related discipline.
  • Experience with broadcast journalism (radio/TV) production, including video and audio editing.
  • Proficiency in a second language relevant to the local community (e.g., Punjabi, Mandarin, Tagalog).
  • Experience in digital content creation, SEO best practices, and social media engagement for news organizations.
  • Familiarity with CBC's specific editorial standards, practices, and programming.
