Key Responsibilities
- Manage a caseload of criminal defense files from initial client consultation through to resolution.
- Conduct thorough legal research and analysis to develop strong defense strategies.
- Draft and file legal documents, including motions, affidavits, and factums.
- Represent clients in various court settings, including bail hearings, preliminary inquiries, trials, and appeals.
- Negotiate with Crown prosecutors to achieve favorable plea agreements or alternative resolutions.
- Provide clear, compassionate, and timely communication with clients regarding their cases.
- Stay updated on changes in criminal law, legal precedents, and procedural rules.
- Collaborate with legal support staff, investigators, and expert witnesses as needed.
- Attend professional development seminars and maintain good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
Required Skills
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree.
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- Proven experience in criminal defense litigation, including trial experience.
- Exceptional courtroom advocacy and oral argumentation skills.
- Strong analytical, legal research, and writing abilities.
- Excellent client communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage a demanding caseload and work effectively under pressure.
- Proficiency in legal case management software and legal research platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with complex criminal matters, including appellate work.
