Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior excavation contractors with various site preparation and excavation tasks.
  • Operate and maintain a range of heavy equipment under direct supervision, including excavators, loaders, and compactors (once certified and deemed competent).
  • Learn and strictly adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, as well as provincial and federal regulations.
  • Perform manual labour tasks such as digging, trenching, shoveling, and moving materials.
  • Assist with the layout and grading of construction sites using hand tools and basic surveying equipment.
  • Support the installation and repair of underground utilities, including water, sewer, and gas lines.
  • Conduct daily equipment checks and assist with routine maintenance to ensure machinery is in safe working order.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding project progress, challenges, and safety concerns.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Required Skills

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Prior experience (e.g., general labour, landscaping, heavy equipment observation) in a construction or related environment.
  • Valid G Class Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Enrollment or interest in an accredited apprenticeship program for heavy equipment operation or a related trade.
  • Basic first aid and CPR certification.
  • WHMIS and Working at Heights certification.
