Hiring.zycto is seeking enthusiastic, resilient, and dedicated Wilderness Camp Counselors to join our seasonal team in Thompson, Manitoba. This is an incredible opportunity to spend your summer (or specific contract period) immersed in nature, guiding young campers through unforgettable outdoor adventures. As a Wilderness Camp Counselor, you will be at the heart of our program, responsible for facilitating engaging activities, ensuring the safety and well-being of campers, and fostering an environment of discovery, respect, and fun.
Our program emphasizes experiential learning, teamwork, and building a deep appreciation for the natural world. You will lead groups through various outdoor pursuits, including hiking, canoeing, wildlife observation, and campcraft, adapting activities to different age groups and skill levels. Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise groups of campers (ages 8-16) in various outdoor activities including hiking, canoeing, nature exploration, and campcraft.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers at all times, adhering to all camp policies and emergency procedures.
- Develop and implement engaging, age-appropriate educational and recreational programs.
- Act as a positive role model, fostering an inclusive, supportive, and respectful camp environment.
- Assist with daily camp operations, including meal times, cabin supervision, and general maintenance tasks.
- Administer basic first aid as needed and accurately document incidents.
- Communicate effectively with fellow staff, campers, and camp leadership.
- Participate actively in staff training sessions and debriefings.
- Promote environmental stewardship and an appreciation for wilderness.
- Manage group dynamics and resolve conflicts in a constructive manner.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated experience in leading or supervising groups of children/youth.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Proficiency in basic outdoor skills (e.g., tent setup, fire building, basic navigation).
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification.
- Ability to adapt to changing weather conditions and rustic living arrangements.
- High level of energy, enthusiasm, and patience.
- Problem-solving and decision-making abilities under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a camp counselor or in outdoor education.
- Certification in specific outdoor activities (e.g., flatwater canoeing, wilderness first aid, NLS Lifeguard).
- Knowledge of local flora, fauna, and Indigenous cultures.
- Experience working with diverse populations or campers with special needs.
- University or college coursework in recreation, education, environmental studies, or a related field.
