Job Description

This role as a Community Developer – Municipal at Hiring.zycto offers a unique opportunity to directly shape the social and physical landscape of the Long Branch community in Toronto. We are seeking a dedicated and passionate professional who is eager to bridge the gap between local residents, municipal services, and community-led initiatives. In this pivotal position, you will be instrumental in identifying community needs, facilitating robust engagement processes, and developing sustainable programs that enhance the quality of life for all Long Branch residents.

The successful candidate will be a proactive problem-solver with exceptional interpersonal skills, capable of navigating complex stakeholder environments including local government representatives, community organizations, resident groups, and businesses. You will lead the charge in establishing meaningful dialogues, gathering feedback, and translating community aspirations into actionable plans. This involves not just listening, but actively empowering residents to participate in decision-making processes, fostering a sense of ownership and collective responsibility for their neighbourhood’s future.

Your day-to-day will be dynamic and varied, ranging from organizing public consultations and workshops to writing grant proposals and managing community projects from conception to completion. You will be responsible for mapping local assets and identifying gaps in services, all while ensuring that our initiatives align with municipal strategic objectives and promote inclusivity and equity. This role demands a strong understanding of urban planning principles, local governance structures, and the socio-economic factors influencing community development. You will act as a key liaison, advocating for the community’s interests and ensuring that their voices are heard and considered in municipal planning and service delivery. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough community needs assessments and asset mapping within the Long Branch area.
  • Design, plan, and facilitate impactful community engagement initiatives, workshops, and public consultations.
  • Develop and implement community development programs and projects in alignment with municipal goals and resident needs.
  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with residents, diverse community groups, local businesses, and municipal stakeholders.
  • Act as a key liaison between community members and various municipal departments to advocate for local needs and concerns.
  • Identify funding opportunities, write compelling grant applications, and manage project budgets effectively.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of community programs, reporting on outcomes, impact, and lessons learned.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports, engaging presentations, and clear communication materials for various internal and external audiences.
  • Promote inclusivity, equity, and diversity in all community development efforts and program design.
  • Stay abreast of best practices, innovative approaches, and emerging trends in municipal community development.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in community engagement, outreach, or development roles.
  • Strong understanding of municipal governance structures and urban planning principles.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate group discussions, manage conflicts, and mediate diverse perspectives effectively.
  • Excellent project management, organizational, and time management abilities.
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and comprehensive report writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport, establish trust, and foster collaborative relationships.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and presentations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Urban Planning, Community Development, Social Sciences, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Experience working with diverse cultural groups and marginalized communities within an urban context.
  • In-depth knowledge of specific community development theories, frameworks, and participatory approaches.
  • Fluency in additional languages relevant to Toronto's diverse population is an asset.
  • Experience with GIS mapping software for community analysis and visualization.
