Hiring.zycto is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Patent Agent with a strong background in technology to join our dynamic Intellectual Property team in Teddington Park, Toronto. You will primarily be responsible for drafting new patent applications, meticulously preparing responses to office actions issued by patent offices globally, and conducting in-depth patentability, novelty, and freedom-to-operate searches. Your technical acumen will be crucial in dissecting intricate invention disclosures, while your legal precision will ensure that patent claims are broad yet defensible. Key Responsibilities
- Drafting and prosecuting patent applications, including preparing specifications, claims, and drawings for filing with national and international patent offices.
- Conducting comprehensive patentability, novelty, validity, infringement, and freedom-to-operate searches and providing detailed analysis.
- Preparing and filing responses to office actions from patent examiners, articulating persuasive legal and technical arguments.
- Providing strategic intellectual property counsel to inventors, engineers, and clients regarding patent strategy, portfolio management, and IP risks.
- Collaborating with clients to understand their inventions, objectives, and commercial goals.
- Assisting with due diligence related to intellectual property in mergers, acquisitions, and licensing agreements.
- Monitoring competitor IP activities and landscape to provide strategic insights.
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of patent law, regulations, and technological advancements.
Required Skills
- Registered Patent Agent in Canada (or eligible for registration)
- Undergraduate degree in Engineering (e.g., Electrical, Mechanical, Software, Computer) or Computer Science
- Minimum 4 years of experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex technical concepts
- In-depth knowledge of Canadian and international patent law and procedures
- Proficiency in patent search databases and IP management software
Preferred Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree
- Master's or Ph.D. in a relevant technical field
- Experience with technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Blockchain, Telecommunications, Robotics, or Cleantech
- Previous experience working in a fast-paced intellectual property law firm or an in-house corporate IP department
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
